More Gmail Users Can Now Use Gemini to Skim Work Emails

Google is rolling out Gmail's AI Inbox and Gmail Live to paid Workspace accounts. Here are the exact plans, dates and limits.

If you use Gmail for work, Gemini is about to get a lot more visible. Google’s Workspace Updates blog announced two expansions on October 15: AI Inbox and Gmail Live are both rolling out to paid Google Workspace users. Here are the details from Google’s own posts.

AI Inbox: to-dos and summaries

Google says AI Inbox highlights “key actionable to-do’s” and summarizes “priority work updates across your emails.” It has two parts:

  • Suggested to-dos: pulls out action items, deliverables and deadlines from email conversations.
  • Topics to catch up on: summarizes your most important topics across long, multi-message threads.

Where to find it: Google says eligible users can open AI Inbox from the Gmail desktop client or the mobile app menu. There’s no admin control for the feature.

Eligible plans (per Google):

  • Business: Business Starter, Standard and Plus
  • Enterprise: Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus
  • Education: AI Pro for Education
  • Other: Frontline Plus

Rollout dates:

  • Rapid Release domains: gradual rollout started October 12, 2026, taking up to 15 days to become visible.
  • Scheduled Release domains: gradual rollout starts October 26, 2026, also taking up to 15 days.

Limits: it’s only for users in the US with their language set to English (US). Google also says AI Inbox “will rollout later to Starter and Education editions in the coming months.” That conflicts a little with its own eligibility list, which includes Business Starter and Enterprise Starter. Admins on Starter plans should check the Help Center before telling staff it’s available.

Gmail Live: voice questions about your inbox

Google’s second post brings Gmail Live to Workspace on Android and iOS. Google describes it as “a low-latency, inbox-aware voice search experience.” You ask questions out loud and hear answers pulled from your email, with links to the source emails.

  • How to start: tap the Live entry point in the Gmail search bar. The first time, you’ll be asked to grant microphone access.
  • Admins: it’s on by default for organizations with Gemini in Workspace access, and it respects existing smart features and personalization settings.
  • Rollout: gradual for both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains starting October 15, 2026 (up to 15 days to become visible).
  • Eligible plans:
    • Business Starter, Standard and Plus
    • Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus
    • Frontline Plus
    • Google Workspace for Nonprofits
    • Add-ons: Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, AI Expanded Access and AI Ultra Access
    • Google AI Pro for Education
    • Consumer plans: Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra
  • Limits: US only, with English (US) as the language.

Android Authority adds that Google’s support page says Gmail Live doesn’t work on Android tablets yet, and that Google is adding a way to change Gmail Live’s voice from the chat screen. It also notes that personal Gmail accounts still need a paid Google AI subscription for both features.

Who this matters to

Analysis: Most VetTV readers use personal Gmail, so nothing changes unless you pay for Google AI. If your job uses Google Workspace in the US, expect AI Inbox to appear between now and mid-November, depending on your domain’s release track. Your admin can’t turn it off.

My take

Opinion: Summaries of long email threads are one of the more useful things AI does. I’d still double-check any to-dos it pulls out before relying on them for deadlines.
