GTA 6 on PS5 Could Top 200GB? Here's Where That Rumor Actually Comes From

A widely shared claim about GTA 6's file size traces back to a leaker describing a development build, not the retail game. Rockstar and Sony haven't announced an install size, so treat 200GB as unconfirmed.

A new round of headlines says Grand Theft Auto VI could need more than 200GB on PlayStation 5. One of the latest comes from GameGPU, which wrote that the game’s “distribution size” on PS5 “may exceed 200 GB.” That sounds like a storage spec. It isn’t one.

Status: unconfirmed. As of my check on October 18, 2026, neither Rockstar Games nor Sony Interactive Entertainment had published a download or install size for GTA VI. The 200GB figure comes from a leaker’s claim about a development build.

Where the 200GB number comes from

I traced the claim back through the coverage:

  • The leaker: The number comes from “CyberLeek,” the anonymous leaker behind a run of alleged GTA VI gameplay clips this month. According to TweakTown and Forbes, CyberLeek said the full playable development build used for those clips is over 200GB. The leaker tied releasing that build to a meme coin reaching a $30 million market cap.
  • The post that spread it: The fan account GTA 6 Info (@GTASixInfo) posted on October 12 at about 6:22 AM CT: “GTA 6 will reportedly be over 200GB in size. Cyberleek claims the full playable development build is 200+GB.” That post has been viewed more than 200,000 times.
  • The pickup: TweakTown, Forbes and others covered the claim, and GameGPU’s story repeats it as “leaks and analysis of leaked benchmark builds for developers.”

I couldn’t find CyberLeek’s own original post, so the earliest public source I can verify is the GTA 6 Info post quoting the leaker. I also couldn’t verify that the build is genuine or that it’s really 200GB. TweakTown reports that fake “CyberLeek” builds of 113GB to 145GB have been circulating on torrent sites, and some have been linked to malware. Don’t go looking for them.

Why a dev build size doesn’t tell you the retail size

Even GameGPU’s own story concedes the key point: development builds traditionally include debugging tools, uncompressed assets and utility libraries. TweakTown makes the same point and adds that studios usually optimize textures before launch.

A real-world example: TweakTown notes that a 192GB Rockstar archive that surfaced in September was mostly GTA V development material. A big dev folder isn’t the same as a big shipping game.

What Rockstar and Sony have actually confirmed

Here’s what’s official:

  • Release date: November 19, 2026, per Rockstar’s Newswire and Take-Two’s pre-order announcement.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation’s game page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro and says the game won’t be playable on PS4. No PC version has been announced.
  • Price: $79.99 for the standard edition, per Take-Two.
  • Pre-loading: Digital pre-orders can pre-load starting November 12, 2026.
  • Physical copies: The boxed version contains a download code, so every player will be downloading the game, per Take-Two’s announcement.
  • Size: Nothing official yet. Neither PlayStation’s GTA VI page nor Rockstar’s announcements list a file size as of my check.

Context: how big are Rockstar’s current games?

These are verified sizes for comparison:

  • GTA V on PS5: Push Square reported a pre-load size of 86.837GB at the PS5 version’s March 2022 launch, covering story mode and GTA Online. TweakTown puts it around 95GB today after years of updates.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: In 2018, Rockstar confirmed the PS4 version needed 99GB installed, and digital buyers needed about 150GB free during installation to unpack it, per Game Informer.

So a jump past 100GB for GTA VI wouldn’t be surprising. Whether it lands anywhere near 200GB is something only Rockstar can answer.

How much space does a PS5 actually have?

The console’s SSD sizes on the box aren’t what you get to use:

  • Original PS5 (825GB SSD): about 667GB usable, as measured by IGN and Polygon at launch.
  • Redesigned “slim” PS5 (1TB SSD): about 848GB usable, per PCMag’s review.
  • Sony’s own note: PlayStation Direct’s listings state that “a portion of the SSD is reserved for system software and other functions so the available SSD capacity may vary.”

If the retail game really were 200GB, it would take up about 30% of a launch PS5’s usable space. That’s a big “if.”

My take (opinion)

This is analysis, not reporting. I’d clear some space before November 12 regardless, because everyone, disc buyers included, has to download this one. But I wouldn’t plan around 200GB. That number came from a leaker using a dev build as bait for a meme coin, and dev builds are bloated by design. Wait for the PlayStation Store or Rockstar to post the real size, which usually happens around pre-load time.
